INSIDE: How to make your own custom candles with ribbon and an iron.
I have a rather large plastic container of candles sitting in my pantry. Most of them have been acquired whenever my mom goes on a cleaning binge of drawers and cupboards, and the contents make their way to my home. Whenever I see my mom walk in with a plastic grocery bag (or two), I know I’m in for some goodie or another!
So when I picked up an old candelabra at a thrift store, instead of running out and buying some new tapers to match my decor, I created my own custom candles using some ribbon and my iron…

how to Make custom candles with ribbon
Because of my sudden “inheritance” of candles, the positive is that I’ll probably not have to purchase another pillar, votive or taper candle in my life! The con, I suppose, is that I’ll probably never use up all these candles and I’m hesitant to introduce fire and matches to my three young, most.touch.everything kids.
So digging through this stash of wax candles, I found four plain white candles. I then dug through my overflowing stash of ribbons to find a couple matching pieces of aqua ribbon. I plugged in my iron and quickly set out to making my own custom candles.
Candle-Decorating Supplies
– Candle (here are some plain white tapers)
– Ribbon
– Iron (here’s a super basic iron should you not have one)
– Parchment paper
3 steps to make custom candles with ribbon
Other than the occasional hot iron “owie”, this super thrifty project comes together super quickly!
Step #1: Rip out a piece of parchment paper long and wide enough to wrap around the candle.
Step #2: Wrap the ribbon around the candle in whatever layout and pattern you like best. I wanted all four tapers to look different so I came up with four patterns.
Step #3: Keeping hold of the ribbon, wrap the parchment paper around the candle. Once secured, gently iron the parchment-wrapped candle making sure to keep rotating the candle so it doesn’t melt and deform.
Make your own custom-decorated candles
Why spend money on store-bought candles when you can easily upcycle an existing candle using any color or style ribbon you may already have at home and your iron?

What a great stash-busting project! My MIL also has a tendency to bring over random boxes of stuff she no longer interested in keeping. No more turning down her old candles! Thanks for sharing at the #happynowlinkup!
