INSIDE: Turn a 5K race t-shirt into a cute ruffled running tank top. Easy DIY clothing sewing project. Girls on the Run team craft.
I’m always on the hunt for Girl Power activities for my daughter. And one such empowering extracurricular is a running program called Girls On The Run. And as things roll for me, in order for our elementary school to get this after-school activity, I had to help lead the program. And train for a 5K!
In my pre-kid life, I was a big runner. But life and injury got in the way. Now, I’m up early in the mornings to run my way up to 3 miles. The things we do for our kids, right?!
When race day came, I celebrated my somewhat successful return to running with a craft. I turned that traditional race t-shirt we all get when we find ourselves signed up for a race into a cute and flowing ruffled sleeveless tank to help get me through the finish line.

How to Make Cute Ruffled Running Tank from T-Shirt
I’ve never been much of a t-shirt person. I tend to take scissors to tees rather quickly!
how to turn a t-shirt into cute women’s tank top
Lay the t-shirt out flat. Cut out the neckline.
With the t-shirt still laying flat on a surface, trim the bottom…
…And cut that piece in half for two long strips.
Use those strips to fold and make ruffles at the bottom of the t-shirt. Remember to pin the wrong side of the ruffle to the right side of the t-shirt.
Sew the ruffle onto bottom of t-shirt.

Cut off the sleeves from the t-shirt. I used the seams as my guide of where to cut to make this more of a muscle tank. Cut more off from the sleeves if you want thinner straps.
Waste not, right?! Use the sleeve fabric to add another layer of ruffle to the bottom of the tank top. Use straight pins to secure and sew.

Whatever gets you out the door exercising, right?!
And the best part? I’m still running …grugingly but I’m out there in the wee hours of the morning.
